Background
About me:
Welcome! I work with my clients using an eclectic and spiritually- oriented approach that fluidly incorporates my training as a therapist working with individuals and couples impacted by trauma, addiction, depression, anxiety as well as phase of life, career and/or relationship stressors.
My experience as a therapist over twenty years is wide and varied; from clinical roles at several academic medical centers (Lucile Packard Children's Hospital at Stanford and Children's Hospital in Boston) to working with individuals, couples and families in outpatient psychiatry (Kaiser Permanente) to varied clientele, mostly executives through The Camden Center's intensive outpatient program, families within UCSF's Youth Outpatient Susbstance Use Program and numerous high-risk populations in the non-profit sectors.
I maintain collaborations with various institutions on both the east and west coast while maintaing my private practice (presently based in San Francisco, CA) which has expanded to include coaching in addition to psychotherapy. Therapy clients access me remotely via a HIPPA compliant telehealth platform and coaching offerings are provided via phone/video throughout the country.
Frameworks
My approach:
Drawing upon evidence-based research, I incorporate many treatment modalities in my practice including Motivational Interviewing (MI), Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART), Internal Family Systems (IFS) and Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR). I am also trained in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) and have studied The Gottman Method, Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) and Esther Perel's framework for couples therapy. Most recently, I am training in psychedelic assisted psychotherapy (specifically, KAP) and will soon be offering this treatment in collaboration with medical providers at Journey Clinical.
My work (both psychotherapy and coaching) is influenced by my studies in all things pertaining to mind-body wellness, self-care and self-empowerment. I have training in reiki, yoga, journey dance, human design and the enneagram. The enneagram is a dynamic personality system which provides a transformational path and framework for building self-awareness, understanding relationship patterns, underlying motivations and ultimately offering insights for personal and/or spiritual growth. All of these frameworks provide a foundations for coaching clients working toward interpersonal growth and connecting to their deeper purposes with clarity, strength and alignment toward their inherent gifts/potential.
Education
My style:
I earned my undergraduate degree with honors at UC Irvine in 1999 and my Master's degree with honors at San Jose State University in 2002. As an everlasting student/seeker, I continue to train and study numerous psychotherapeutic frameworks and somatic healing modalities which have enhanced and enriched the therapeutic process/space and my coaching work.
My style is fluid, attuned and collaborative while utilizing an affirmative, relational, authentic and holistic approach. My clients have expressed appreciation for my breadth of knowledge, intuition and dedication to their goals, growth and interpersonal/relational development. It is an honor, joy and privilege to partner with my clients on their healing path.

Services
Couples Therapy/Coaching
Couples therapy and coaching is often about identifying our underlying wounding patterns/triggers and attachment styles that show up in relationship. I've worked with couples in unearthing these and developing more compassion, patience and understanding for one another through shared reflection, communication and collaborative problem-solving. Common themes have included family transitions, parenting and managing work-life balance in the context of demanding careers.
Trauma Healing
From "small" traumas to complex traumas, I work with individuals to help release, re-frame, reprocess and recover from life events, stressors and/or intergenerational trauma. In doing so, reconciling/transcending what has previously blocked the individual from experiencing ease, confidence, joy and presence in their day to day life. The work assists in reconsolidation and re-integration with the whole self and with envisioning a brighter and more empowered future.
Individual Therapy/Coaching
Individual therapy and coaching offers an opportunity to delve deeper into the inner landscape; discovering underlying triggers. Through the excavation process, old patterns are illuminated and new coping skills and strategies are implemented for building stronger/cohesive relationships with self and others. The frequent aim is increased self-awareness, elevated consciousness, clarity and connection to deeper purposes that are aligned with the individual's inherent gifts/potential.
Tune-Ups
Having solo-traveled across the country twice in an oil guzzling Audi, I have become familiarized with car maintenance. Car maintenance, is a bit like engaging in therapy/coaching, we all need to go in for a tune-up from time to time.
Testimonials:
"Julie has a very warm and nurturing presence. Her compassion is palpable and she is a wonderful listener. I feel at ease and in such good hands with her care and guidance. I have done many years of traditional psychotherapy, and I find that the therapeutic techniques Julie uses go much deeper for me - bringing true change to areas where talking alone wasn't enough. Julie has helped me release stress and trauma held in my emotions, nervous system, and body. Her integrative approach has helped me move past trauma and find more happiness and peace."
Lisa (client)
"I started working with Julie in 2017, after working with my previous therapist for many years and feeling a little "stuck" like I was repeating the same old patterns, and not getting at the root of a lot of issues. Julie opened me up to so many different ways of healing and approaching my mental health, beyond just traditional CBT; I've gained such a better understanding of who I am, how and why I function and react to things in the world, how to better process emotions and so on. I am so grateful for her guidance and support over the years. I can honestly say my life has completely changed for the better because of her."
Kate (client)
"After a series of "unfortunate events" I was feeling very unsafe. I decided to see a therapist trained in EMDR. Within a week, I had an appointment to see Julie. We had an immediate connection, and I found I was comfortable telling her everything without fear or judgement. We began our journey together. No matter what we did, I felt Julie was by my side as she led me into the hidden parts of myself. Slowly with the deep process of EMDR and Julie's expert guidance, I began to reconnect with my inner resources, intuition and courage. And, to finally be able to speak my truth. My world began to expand. I know now that I have the inner resources to guide me on my future path."
JB (client)
"I've been in a consultation group with Julie for almost five years, and hence know her work well and can highly recommend her. Julie is unfailingly warm and compassionate, quickly putting her clients at ease and allowing them to work in a situation of safety and positive regard. Julie is an active, life-long learner, and works to on-goingly add therapeutic techniques and tools to her helping repertoire. I frequently refer clients to Julie and recommend her without reservation."
